Steven Soderbergh has made several films about sex, including "Magic Mike" and "Girlfriend Experience".
Despite his experience with the subject, he finds it ridiculous to shoot sex scenes and avoids them.
The director hired porn actress Sasha Grey for "Girlfriend Experience", but did not show any explicit scenes.
It is not uncommon for directors to focus on one central theme in some of their films. The Italian Luca Guadagnino (52) likes the complexity of human relationships, the eroticism behind them. Or Martin Scorsese (81), who likes to focus on the downside of American prosperity in his gangster films.
Steven Soderbergh (61), meanwhile, often focuses on sex. His filmography includes the stripper film "Magic Mike", the story of a call girl in "Girlfriend Experience" and the voyeuristic work "Sex, Lies and Videotape".
In an interview with "Hollywood Reporter", he talks about how he finds it "ridiculous" to shoot sex scenes despite his experience with the subject.
Soderbergh sticks to his no-sex motto
Actors who simulate sex in front of the camera are not his thing: "I'm not interested in it. Nobody looks good doing it." He can't remember the last time he shot such scenes.
The statement is surprising, as he had hired porn actress Sasha Grey for "Girlfriend Experience" - and thus had a professional in front of the camera. He did not show any explicit scenes, as he always sticks to his no-sex policy.
