With her Olympic victory, Aargau sport shooter Chiara Leone has ensured that a politician from her home canton will be walking to Paris. These are the Olympic splinters from Friday.
Aargau politician walks 600 km for Olympic victory
The canton of Aargau has not been particularly blessed with Olympic luck in the past. To further motivate the athletes from Aargau, cantonal councillor Alex Hürzeler (SVP) made a bet. If an athlete from Aargau wins an Olympic medal, he or she will walk from Paris to Aargau. Following Chiara Leone's Olympic victory, this promise must now be fulfilled. In a video published on Instagram, the politician promised to make good on his betting debt at the end of the year after his retirement. He wants to have achieved his goal by the next Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
Ex-prime minister provides aid service
As an Olympic helper in the corridors of the Paris metro, France's former Prime Minister Jean Castex is surprising many French people these days. The former top politician, who took over as head of the Paris transport company RATP in 2022, has already been spotted several times in the purple vest of the 5,000 or so helpers who are showing Olympic visitors the way in the metro, as reported by the newspaper "Le Parisien". However, Castex had no time for journalists' questions on the platform in view of the many Olympic tourists. "I can't answer them, I'm on duty," he said.
Water interruption in land hockey
In the Olympic land field hockey final between Germany and the Netherlands, there was an unintentional interruption. In the third quarter, with the score at 0:0, a water sprinkler activated on its own near the halfway line. The referees had to briefly interrupt the game until the problem could be rectified. The Netherlands ultimately won the final against their rivals on penalties.
