Unlike three years ago in Tokyo, the coronavirus pandemic is hardly an issue in Paris. Nevertheless, there are still cases at the Summer Games in France.
Shortly before the start of the Olympic Games, the Australian water polo players are dealing with a case of coronavirus. An unnamed player has tested positive for the virus, Australia's Head of Mission, Anna Meares, announced at a press conference in Paris.
The player has been isolated from the rest of the team, but is in good physical condition and can even train individually. Two teammates are being monitored more closely as a precaution. "This is a high-performance sports environment, so we are being careful. But I must emphasize that we are not treating corona any differently than other viruses like the flu - this is not Tokyo," Meares said, according to the Australian news agency AAP.
At the Games in Japan three years ago, there were still extremely strict rules in place to contain the coronavirus pandemic. In France, there are neither regular mandatory tests nor a mask requirement at the major event. These were last partially in place at the Tour de France, which ended on Sunday.
