Austria take the final step into the last 16 of the European Championship with a 3:2 win against the Netherlands - and as group winners. The Oranjes were already in the knockout round.

With a strong performance, the Austrians confirmed their status as the secret favorites. They emerged victorious in the group with heavyweights France and the Netherlands. The Dutch equalized twice, but twice the Austrians were able to respond promptly. The Oranjes then had no answer to Marcel Sabitzer's powerful shot ten minutes before the end.

The self-confident team of German coach Ralf Rangnick had started the European Championships with an early own goal and a 1-0 defeat against France, and now it was they who put their opponents under so much pressure that they scored the wrong goal. After just five minutes, new signing Donyell Malen slid the ball into his own net. After Cody Gakpo equalized, it was a Romano Schmid header that Stefan de Vrij could only push behind his own line in the greatest of emergencies.

The defeat has no direct consequences for the Dutch, who have been so solid defensively so far, but as third in the group they will now face a much stronger opponent in the round of 16. A draw would have been enough to win the group, as France did not manage more than a draw against Poland. Coach Ronald Koeman has yet to find the right balance. While his players were good defensively in the first two games, the offense stuttered. Now the stars Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay scored, but they were poor at the back.
