Basel's offense in particular was convincing across the board. Thierno Barry scored again - his fifth goal of the season in only his third appearance. Benie Traoré, the other 21-year-old striker, set up Barry's 1:0 and scored the 2:0 himself. And Albian Ajeti (27), the former Super League top scorer who completes Basel's attacking trident, shone with two goals (3:0 and 4:0) and an assist.
Suddenly, FC Basel are presenting themselves in a completely different light than last season and in the first two rounds of this season, when games in Lausanne (2:3) and at home against Lugano (1:2) were lost. Away victories at Grasshoppers (3:0) and in Geneva are impressive. Servette slumped
Servette, who impressed with a 0-0 draw at Braga in Portugal on Thursday, kept pace with Basel for 45 minutes. Marwin Hitz shone with three super saves in the first half. The fact that Basel led at the break was solely down to the goalkeeper.
After the break, however, Servette collapsed - because Basel extended their lead in the 46th minute, because they no longer had enough strength after the "English week" and because they lacked the belief to catch up. Basel equaled the highest victory over Servette in the club's history (also 6:0 on August 24, 2003). Servette suffered their heaviest home defeat in recent history. On April 22, 2023, the Servettiens lost 1:6 at home to Young Boys.
Basel's trident
Also noteworthy: Marin Soticek (81') and Benjamin Kololli (87') scored the first Basel goals of the season - 5:0 and 6:0 - in which none of the trident of Barry, Traoré and Ajeti were involved. And these goals were already goals number 11 and 12 of the season.
