The Felsenau Viaduct on the A1 highway in Bern will become a meeting place for climbing enthusiasts. From next Saturday, they will be able to climb up to a height of 40 meters on two bridge pillars.
14 climbing routes and more than 1800 climbing holds are available, as the city of Bern announced on Wednesday. This means that the federal city now has a sustainable outdoor offer for the increasingly popular sport of climbing.
The city has contributed to the initial costs and supported the project during the planning and approval phase. The Bern section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) has largely financed the project and carried out a crowdfunding campaign to cover the remaining costs.
A safety concept has been drawn up for the use of the facility. Before climbing can take place, appropriate safety knowledge must be confirmed in a user agreement. As with any public sports facility, use of the facility is at the user's own risk, the city states.
The Felsenau Viaduct was put into operation in 1975. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) gave the green light for the climbing walls in 2020.
