After their bitter cup exit, FC Thun secured their fourth win in a row in the championship. The surprising promoted team humiliated FC Zurich at the Letzigrund and won 4:0.
The elimination from the Promotion League against Bernese club Breitenrain briefly dampened the joy at Thun's strong start to the season. But just one week later, the Bernese Oberlanders were celebrating again. The surprise team of the season so far proved ice-cold in front of goal in Zurich.
Four different goalscorers were responsible for the clear away success. The first to score was Elmin Rastoder, who was able to run in alone on FCZ goalkeeper Yanick Brecher after a beautiful chipped pass from Christopher Ibayi. Before the break, 20-year-old Ethan Meichtry increased the lead after a strong individual performance.
FCZ seemed determined to get back into the game immediately after the break. However, unlike Thun, the Zurich side seemed inhibited in front of goal and played awkwardly. Rastoder and Ibayi showed how easy it can be, combining with quick passes from their own to the opposing penalty area in the 59th minute and Ibayi successfully finishing off the counter-attack. After that, Zurich's resistance was broken. Valmir Matoshi ensured the final score in stoppage time.
After losing 3-2 to Sion in the season opener, new coach Mitchell van der Gaag's team were also beaten in their second home game of the season. In addition, substitute Philippe Kény was shown the red card after punching a Thun player in the face and now faces a lengthy ban.
The unstoppable Thun, on the other hand, remain at the top of the table with maximum points. St. Gallen can close the gap on Sunday. Before the international break in September, coach Mauro Lustrinelli's team will face Grasshoppers at home.
