Hungary beat Scotland 1:0 thanks to a goal well into injury time and kept their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 alive with their first points of the current European Championship.
The starting position was actually very promising, as both teams needed a win to keep their chances of reaching the round of 16 alive. However, what was on show for long stretches of the game was not very encouraging. It was only in the final minutes that the game picked up pace and a goal was actually scored in the 100th minute. Kevin Csoboth, who had failed to hit the post eight minutes earlier, was responsible after a counter-attack.
Although the Scots had 59 percent more possession than the Eastern Europeans, they made almost nothing of it. They only managed one shot on goal from Hungarian keeper Peter Gulacsi. This was despite the fact that after the 1:1 draw against Switzerland, the Scots had a golden opportunity to get through the preliminary round for the first time ever at a World Cup or European Championship finals.
The Hungarians also showed too little overall. In the 68th minute, there was an unpleasant scene. Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and came to a standstill. The shock was written all over the faces of the fans and players. After minutes of treatment behind a screen, he was carried off on a stretcher.
