Like many medal winners at the Olympic Games, Julie Derron from Zurich is amazed at how heavy the medals are. These are the Olympic splinters from the seventh day.

The weight of the medal

For most medal winners at the Olympic Games, success becomes really real when they have the coveted prize around their neck after the award ceremony - if only because they realize that the precious metal is quite heavy. This was also the case for Wednesday's triathlon dominators, Cassandre Beaugrand and Julie Derron. "They're quite heavy," the Frenchwoman and the Swiss woman noted with surprise. Derron is even heavier. The silver medal weighs 525 grams, the gold one two grams less. The material value of the silver one is around 468 francs - not including the piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower that is in each medal.

Cassis at the Maison Suisse

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis was already a guest in Paris on Wednesday, July 31, to mark the national holiday. The Ticino native visited the Swiss athletes at the Maison Suisse and in the Olympic Village. Cassis held talks, posed for photos, played table football and watched the fencing and BMX competitions live in the stadium. The politician also gave a 1 August speech at the Swiss delegation's home.

Two medals on the same day

Only the Olympics write stories like this. Swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri won bronze in the 800 m crawl. His fiancée, Rosella Fiamingo, won gold 15 minutes later in the women's epee fencing team competition. The couple from Italy can now display an impressive collection of Olympic medals at home. Both have a complete set of medals. Paltrinieri already won gold in Rio 2016 and silver and bronze in Tokyo 2021. He is the first Italian swimmer to win a medal at three consecutive Summer Games. Fiamingo previously won silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo.
