Schmidt asked 1. FSV Mainz to relinquish operational responsibility and step down from day-to-day business because, according to the club, "other priorities have come to the fore for Schmidt that require his personal presence in Switzerland".

Martin Schmidt will continue to work for Mainz in the background as a sports consultant. As a footballer, Schmidt rose from the 3rd division to the National League B with Naters. In Switzerland, he coached Raron and the second team of FC Thun. He made his career in Germany as a coach at Mainz (2015 to 2017), Wolfsburg (2017 to 2018) and Augsburg (2019 to 2020). Four years ago, he returned to Mainz in the position of sports director.

Niko Bungert, previously assistant to coach Bo Henriksen, takes over the job of sporting director at Mainz.
