12 Swiss medals predicted

The well-known forecasting platform Gracenote Sports published its latest predictions for the medal table at the Olympic Games in Paris on Tuesday. Switzerland would finish in 26th place with 12 medals, behind Uzbekistan and ahead of Iran. The Nielsen Group Institute predicted six silver medals and six bronze medals, but no Swiss Olympic champion. Three years ago in Tokyo, Switzerland came 24th in the medal game with three gold, four silver and six bronze awards. At the top of the predictions list is the USA with 112 medals, one fewer than in Tokyo. They are followed in the top 5 by China (86), Great Britain (63), hosts France (60) and Australia (54).

The somewhat different medal table

The USA also leads the "eternal" medal table of the Summer Games with over 2,600 medals, followed by Switzerland in 22nd place with 213 gold, silver or bronze medals. The situation is somewhat different when the size of the population is taken into account. With 23.87 medals (including 6.36 gold medals) per million inhabitants, Switzerland ranks 12th in an international comparison. The Bahamas leads this statistic with 55.75 medals per million inhabitants. While the sporting superpowers USA (31st), USSR/Russia (40th) and China (63rd) follow far behind in the rankings, four northern European countries - Finland (2nd), Sweden (4th), Denmark (5th) and Norway (7th) - are right at the top.

Money for gold

What is an Olympic victory worth? Eternal fame and honor, answer sports romantics. Attention, clicks and followers, say consultants these days. A lot of satisfaction and relief after years of exertion, athletes often report. The World Athletics Federation is now adding 50,000 dollars, or around 44,500 francs, to each gold medal in Paris. This is the first time in the history of the Games that a professional federation has awarded cash prizes to its Olympic champions.
