The top-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic makes a lightning start to the Olympic tournament. Djokovic defeats Australian Matthew Ebden 6:0, 6:1 in 54 minutes.
Novak Djokovic never got into trouble against the world number 3 in the doubles. Matthew Ebden celebrated winning his first point in the first game to make it 15:0 - because it was clear to him that he would not be able to threaten Djokovic. Ebden, who played his last singles match on the tour two years ago in Winston-Salem (USA) against Switzerland's Marc-Andrea Hüsler, never led again after that. The Australian at least managed to serve out the second set at 1:4 - and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Djokovic still has a few scores to settle with the Olympics. He is taking part in the Olympic Games for the fifth time in Paris, but he only won a bronze medal at the premiere in 2008 - after a semi-final defeat against Rafael Nadal and a victory in the match for third place against James Blake. Djokovic could meet Nadal again in the 2nd round at Roland-Garros. However, there are question marks surrounding Nadal's start in the singles due to thigh problems. Nadal's first singles match against the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics is scheduled for Sunday.
