Mityukov was only beaten by the Hungarian Hubert Kos and the Greek Apostolos Christou in the La Défense Arena swimming pool in Paris. The World Championship silver medallist finished the four lengths in 1:54.85 minutes, lowering his Swiss record by almost half a second.

Mityukov took it easy as usual in his first Olympic final, finishing in 5th place after 150 m, but put in a final sprint on the last lane length and overtook two competitors. He was just three hundredths short of silver. However, with a gap of just under six tenths, gold was out of reach for the fastest in the preliminary heat and second in the semi-finals.

Mityukov secured the fourth medal for a Swiss swimmer at the Olympic Games, the fourth in bronze. Three years ago in Tokyo, Jérémy Desplanches in the 200m medley and Noè Ponti in the 100m also came third, as did Étienne Dagon in the 200m breaststroke in Los Angeles in 1984.
