Splinters from Sunday: Too much love for Ronaldo, an offer for Kane and German police officers rush to the aid of the Dutch.

Too much fan love

Cristiano Ronaldo loved it the first time. A ten-year-old junior from KSV Hessen Kassel ran onto the pitch during the match between Portugal and Turkey in Dortmund and received a friendly hug and a selfie with the superstar. He had told his father that he had to go to the toilet. But the young fan found imitators. There were more attempts before the final whistle, and after the third stoppage in play, Ronaldo was having much less fun. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez recalled the safety aspect: "That shouldn't happen. This time it was fans, what if someone with bad intentions gets onto the pitch?"

German police help Dutch fan

The German police and a train driver saved a Dutch football fan's European Championship evening in Leipzig. The 53-year-old Dutchman forgot his smartphone and the ticket for the European Championship match between the Netherlands and France on a bench at Leipzig Central Station on Friday, from where it subsequently disappeared, as the federal police in Leipzig reported on Sunday. After viewing video recordings, federal police officers identified an unknown man who had taken the phone. In the meantime, the Dutchman's daughter located the cell phone on a train bound for Cottbus. The signal could be traced to Finsterwalde in Brandenburg. There, the police in Finsterwalde were able to apprehend the suspected cell phone thief. The cell phone was quickly sent back to Leipzig on the next regional train, so that the Dutchman was in the stadium in time for kick-off.

European Championship fans bring high turnover to train bistros

Beer and bratwurst sandwiches: European Championship fans are generating high sales for Deutsche Bahn in its on-board bistros. As reported by "Bild am Sonntag", citing company data, German and European fans drank a total of 44,588 liters of beer between 14 and 19 June - the equivalent of 132 tanker trucks and twice as much as usual. In terms of food, the bratwurst roll saw a whopping 63% increase in sales, with 7,105 orders placed. Butter croissants were also popular, with 8901 orders and an increase of 22 percent compared to a normal week. Chili con carne, chili sin carne and focaccia also saw double-digit increases.

Thuringian offer for Harry Kane

A German journalist had the laughs on his side when he made Harry Kane a contract offer. In Blankenhain in Thuringia, he asked the England striker if he could imagine "moving here to Thuringia? Would you stay here?" The reporter had the offer from the amateur club SG Lauscha/Neuhaus with him: "You would get as many Thuringian roast sausages as you want, plus drinks at the bar and minimum wage. They would also have more time for the national team." Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, put the local journalist off for the time being: "I have to speak to my advisor and see what we can do."
