The rowing regattas at the 2028 Olympic Games will take place in a shortened pool. In Los Angeles, only 1500 meters will be available instead of the usual 2000 meters.
The organizers changed the venue for the rowing competitions a few months ago. Originally, the Olympic medals were to be awarded 110 km east of Los Angeles at Perris Lake, which would have required costly construction work.
In order to limit the costs and environmental impact, the pool used at the 1932 Olympic Games in Long Beach, the harbor of the Californian metropolis, was used. However, the pool is now crossed by a bridge, which shortens the competition distance to 1500 meters - the shortest in the history of the Summer Games.
The decision is "not ideal" or "satisfactory" and will remain "unique to adapt to the particular context of Los Angeles", Jean-Christophe Rolland, President of the International Rowing Federation, assured on Monday. At a press conference on the sidelines of the 2024 Olympic Games regattas in Vaires-sur-Marne, he ruled out any changes to the sport or the rules.
