Slovakia and Romania have reached the knockout round of a European Championship for the second time. On the third matchday of Group E, a 1-1 draw in Frankfurt was enough for them.

The "shame of Frankfurt" was expected, as both teams were aware that a point would be enough to progress. But unlike the "non-aggression pact of Gijon", when the national teams of the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria stopped attacking after Germany went 1-0 up early on in the 1982 World Cup, a lively game developed in Frankfurt right from the start.
The Slovaks took a deserved lead in the 24th minute and for the third time in the third match. Ondrej Duda headed Juraj Kucka's cross into the goal against the direction of Florin Nita. The fact that the team of Italian coach Francesco Calzona did not win for the second time and thus secure the group victory was due to Razvan Marin, who converted a penalty eight minutes before the break in an extremely confident manner. Prior to this, David Hancko had brought down Ianis Hagi on the edge of the penalty area - after viewing the video footage, referee Daniel Siebert decided on a penalty.
Both teams also had their chances in the second half, which was marked by a heavy thunderstorm, but were unable to convert any of them. As the game wore on, both teams eventually settled for a draw, but without completely abandoning their play and attacking efforts.
The Slovaks secured a place in the round of 16 for the second time in their third appearance. The Romanians also reached the knockout phase for the second time, the first time in 24 years.
