The last 16 places in Groups C and D will be decided on Tuesday. Almost all of them can still have hopes of reaching the knockout phase with a win on the last matchday.
The English fans have so far been "not amused" by the performances of the "Three Lions" at this European Championship. The unconvincing 1:0 win against Serbia in the opening match was followed by an even less convincing 1:1 against Denmark. However, as the teams in Group C have been busy taking points off each other, England are still top of the table and should progress to the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's match against Slovenia in Cologne. However, the lamentations about the passive style of play that coach Gareth Southgate has to listen to at every tournament will only become quieter for the finalists of the last European Championship if the English are convincing in the knockout games.
Behind them, Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia still have a chance of progressing. If the Danes, semi-finalists three years ago, win for the first time in this tournament, they will be guaranteed a place in the last 16. If the Serbs, who have been unconvincing so far, achieve their first full success, they will probably remain in the tournament. And if the Slovenians manage a coup against the English, the Eastern Europeans will be in the knockout round for the first time in their second European Championship appearance.
In Group D, the positions are more clearly defined. In front are the two favorites, the Netherlands and France, behind them are the brash Austrians, and at the bottom of the table are the still point-less Poles, who are unlikely to remain in the tournament even if they beat France at the end of the group stage.
Austria, one of Switzerland's test match opponents in preparation, can lift themselves into the round of 16 with a win against the Dutch in Berlin. Otherwise, Ralf Rangnick's team will have to hope to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group.
