The USA just managed to maintain its status as the most successful summer nation at the Olympic Games.

With the Americans' triumph in the women's basketball final, the last decision of Paris 2024, the US team just managed to secure first place in the medal table ahead of China for the fourth time in a row.
Like the USA, China took home 40 gold medals, but the US athletes also won 44 silver and 42 bronze medals, while China took 27 silver and 24 bronze.
The late turnaround in favor of the USA is a parallel to Tokyo 2021, when China was also still in the lead before the final day. The last time the USA was not number 1 in the medal tally was at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, when hosts China were clearly ahead with 48 to 36 gold medals.
As at the home games three years ago, third place in Paris went to Japan (20-12-13). Behind Australia, France was the best European country in fifth place.
Switzerland dropped 24 places compared to Tokyo and finished the Games in 48th place with one gold medal, two silver and five bronze. Three years ago, Switzerland had won three gold medals thanks to Jolanda Neff, Belinda Bencic and Nina Christen. In Paris, Chiara Leone was the only Swiss winner.
