Young Boys can continue to dream of participating in the Champions League. They won the play-off first leg against Galatasaray 3:2 in their home stadium.
The fingertips decided in favor of YB. The fingertips of Abdülkerim Bardakci. The Galatasaray defender threw himself into Darian Males' shot in the 83rd minute and seemingly heroically deflected it out for a corner kick. But before it was taken, the referee grabbed his ear, ran to the touchline and looked at the scene again. The unfortunate Bardakci, who was subsequently sent off with a yellow-red card, had touched the ball with his fingers, but with his arm outstretched.
Filip Ugrinic seized the opportunity and scored to make it 3:2, giving YB a victory that seemed to have slipped away. And one that could ultimately be worth many millions.
Monteiro scores twice...
The game was a rollercoaster of emotions. At the break, many fans in the Wankdorf must have rubbed their eyes in amazement as the home team went into the dressing room with a 2-0 lead. Joël Monteiro had scored twice. The Galatasaray defense allowed itself to be played around surprisingly easily for the goals. In the 3rd minute, Ebrima Colley successfully disrupted the build-up and Filip Ugrinic passed to the other side, where Monteiro enjoyed plenty of space. In stoppage time of the first half, goalkeeper Marvin Keller launched Silvère Ganvoula with a kick, who extended the ball with his head and once again Monteiro found himself alone in front of goal. It was a double premiere for the 25-year-old. It was his first goal of the season and his first goal at international level.
The fact that Keller was standing between the posts at this point was due to the absence of captain David von Ballmoos through injury. He had already injured his shoulder in the 12th minute in a collision with Mauro Icardi. Von Ballmoos played another 20 minutes before the 29-year-old made way for his team-mate, seven years his junior. Keller, who was playing only his seventh competitive game for YB, showed no signs of nervousness and was able to distinguish himself on several occasions.
...Batshuayi too
In the 66th minute, however, even Keller was powerless. After a corner kick, the ball landed at the second post, where Michy Batshuayi, who had just come on as a substitute, was lurking and scored the equalizer for the Turks with his first touch of the ball. And just six minutes later, the 30-year-old was forgotten again. After a beautiful pass, Batshuayi flicked the ball into the net from the edge of the box to make it 2:2.
The momentum seemed to have turned and the large number of Turkish fans in Bern got into the mood. However, YB showed character and continued to go on the offensive - with the familiar reward at the end. Galatasaray's substitute goalkeeper Günay Güvenc, who replaced the injured Fernando Muslera at the break, was unable to save the penalty.
The Bernese now have time to prepare for the away game in Istanbul, having brought forward their league match at the weekend (1:3 against Servette). The Turks, on the other hand, are back in action in the championship on Saturday, with the home game against Gaziantep not involving any further travel. Next Tuesday, in front of 50,000 fans, it will be decided who will continue in the Champions League and who will have to make do with the Europa League.
