Zurich cantonal police arrested a man on Sunday morning following a speeding accident. His vehicle had previously collided with a traffic island and a billboard and skidded across a sidewalk.

The man was driving a sports car on Schwenkelbergstrasse in the direction of Regensdorf shortly before 4 a.m., presumably at excessive speed, Zurich cantonal police reported on Sunday. The speed limit on this stretch of road is 60 km/h. It is not yet possible to say how fast he was driving, the cantonal police said on request.

In a left-hand bend, he had touched the kerb on the right-hand side of the road with his vehicle. The driver lost control of the car and collided with a traffic island and a billboard at the junction with Geerenstrasse, according to the statement. The car then skidded over the sidewalk and through some bushes before coming to a standstill on the road.

According to the press release, the 22-year-old Swiss man was uninjured and was arrested at the scene of the accident. He was taken to hospital in an ambulance for a medical check-up and then transported to police custody.

The Zurich cantonal police and the Winterthur/Unterland public prosecutor's office are investigating the man on suspicion of a speeding offense. His driver's license was confiscated and the car seized.

Schwenkelbergstrasse remained closed until shortly after 7 a.m. due to the accident. The fire department's traffic team set up a detour. The police are looking for witnesses.
