Most of a company's greenhouse gas emissions are generated in the supply chain. On average, these emissions are 26 times higher than a company's operational CO2 emissions.

This is the conclusion of a new study by the consulting firm Boston Consulting and the non-governmental organization CDP. Data from around 23,000 companies worldwide was taken into account.

Operational emissions (also known as Scope 1 & 2) are greenhouse gases that a company causes directly. For example, through the heating system, electricity consumption or the vehicle fleet. CO2 emissions from the supply chain, which in most cases are mainly generated by suppliers, are referred to as Scope 3 emissions.

According to the study, only very few companies have supply chain emissions on their radar. Only 15 percent of companies have set themselves a greenhouse gas reduction target for the supply chain.
