From October 26, the 554th edition of the Basel Autumn Fair will feature almost 470 rides, food stalls and trade stands. Traditionally, Switzerland's largest amusement fair is held at seven locations in the city.

The 2024 Autumn Fair will feature 33 new attractions, as announced by those responsible for Basel's location marketing and the Trade Fairs and Markets department at a media conference on Wednesday. These include 20 new stands and 13 new rides.

The presence of the 85-metre high "Aeronaut" chain carousel on the Kasernenareal was announced as a beacon in the truest sense of the word. Another attractive novelty announced by those responsible was the "Spuk" ghost coaster on the Rosental site at Messe Basel, which combines a ghost ride with a roller coaster.

A depot system will now be used to dispose of pet bottles in the areas around the exhibition center. This will result in additional work for stand operators, as Head of Location Marketing Christoph Bosshardt said. However, it is a reaction to the fact that the recycling rate has been unsatisfactory in recent years.

Only the oldest fair to a limited extent

The autumn fair will be opened on October 26 at 12.00 noon in the tower of St. Martin's Church and will run until November 10 - on St. Peter's Square with its trade stands until November 12. Around one million visitors from all over Switzerland and neighboring countries are expected to attend.

For many years, the Basel Autumn Fair was the oldest fair in Switzerland. For some years now, however, the Lucerne Autumn Fair has laid claim to this title. According to the Basel organizers, they do not want to get involved in a skirmish. However, Basel can still claim to be home to the oldest pleasure fair, as the Lucerne fair was originally purely a trade fair, they said.
