Migros wants to concentrate on its core business and is selling off subsidiaries such as Melectronics.
This will free up space in Migros' own shopping centers. An expert reports great interest in sales areas in the Migros shopping centers.
The Deichmann Group is reportedly interested in SportX. The German company owns Ochsner Sport, Ochsner Shoes, Dosenbach and Snipes in Switzerland.
Melectronics has been sold - and a solution is said to be on the horizon for SportX. This was reported by the NZZ, citing unnamed sources. The German Deichmann Group is said to be interested. In Switzerland, it already owns Ochsner Sport, Ochsner Shoes, Dosenbach and the sneaker chain Snipes. The largest shoe retailer in Europe, with over 180 million pairs sold annually, is said to be interested in taking over many of SportX's sales areas.
The sale of Melectronics to Media Markt has already been sealed. The home electronics retailer will take over 20 of 37 stores. This means that sales of televisions, computers and other household electronics will continue in more than half of Melectronics' stores.
In contrast, 17 stores will have to be restocked - or they will remain empty. The emptiness could also spread to the shopping centers owned by Migros, where subsidiaries have previously occupied a significant proportion of the sales space. Stores such as Do it + Garden or Micasa need a lot of space and would therefore leave large gaps if they were not replaced.
Migros makes room for German chain stores
Other furniture stores in Switzerland are not vying for the Migros subsidiaries, writes the NZZ. At most, Ikea could be interested in more small stores, as it is increasingly doing. Competitor Coop is not keen to secure space in Migros malls with Jumbo.
However, the NZZ quotes shopping center expert Marcel Stoffel as saying that Migros shopping centers are not expected to be half empty: "There are companies that want to expand into Switzerland or extend their network - such as the drugstore chains Rossmann and Müller. The discount supermarket Action also recently opened its first store in Switzerland.
Should Migros actually be able to rent the vacant space in its shopping centers to third parties, it would probably even generate additional income from its real estate portfolio. This is because the Migros subsidiaries charge relatively low rents - which also come out of their own pockets.
Great interest in stores in the Glatt center
The interest in retail space under the Migros umbrella is confirmed by the manager of the Glattzentrum, the mall with the highest turnover in Switzerland. Since Migros announced the restructuring, they have been inundated with inquiries, he told the NZZ.
However, he cannot rent out the space himself. This is done by Migros Supermarkt AG, which owns the Glattzentrum. Neither the Migros Cooperative Federation nor individual cooperatives explain in the NZZ what they plan to do with vacant space in their shopping centers.
