According to the UN, around 893,000 people have been affected by severe flooding in the civil war country of Sudan. In addition, more than 241,000 people have been displaced as a result, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) announced on Thursday.

Floods continue to occur throughout the country, displacing people, according to a recent Ocha report on the situation in the north-east African country, which is frequently affected by climate disasters. 15 important roads were largely impassable, meaning that many of the country's inhabitants could not be reached.

According to Ocha, more than 40 percent of those affected live in the northern districts of Unity and Warrap. Residents have been displaced in 16 districts as well as in the Abyei region, which is disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. Many sought shelter in higher areas. In total, 42 of the country's 78 districts and Abyei have been affected by the floods.

Nine million people in need

At the beginning of October, the World Bank warned of a worsening of the "already critical humanitarian situation" in the civil war-torn country of Sudan due to the renewed storms. Among other things, the country is struggling with severe "food insecurity, economic decline, ongoing conflict and disease outbreaks". The number of people in need this year is estimated to be nine million.

Floods do occur in Sudan every year. But this year, the effects are particularly severe as a result of more than a year and a half of fighting between rival militaries.

In Sudan, the army and the rival RSF militia are fighting for supremacy. Both sides are criticized for firing on densely populated residential areas. According to the UN, tens of thousands of people have already been killed and more than ten million people are on the run. Around 25 million people - more than half the population - are starving as a result of the conflict. It is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
