It does not yet have a name, but it is already a small sensation: a pangolin has been born at Prague Zoo.
It is the second Chinese pangolin to be born there in 17 months. The mammals, which are also known as pine cone animals because of their appearance, are threatened with extinction.
The Czech zoo received father Guo Bao and mother Run Hou Tang in 2022 from Taipei Zoo, the leading pangolin breeder. Pangolin girl Cone was born in February 2023 and now her little sister.
At birth, the pangolin weighed just 141 grams, but is now almost 250 grams. Adult animals can weigh up to 6.8 kilograms.
Pangolins live in southern China and south-east Asia - other species live in Africa. They are heavily hunted for their scales and meat. To prevent their extinction, the international commercial trade in pangolins was banned back in 2016.
