At its synod on Wednesday, the Roman Catholic Church of the Canton of Baselland decided to support the Swiss Guard in the Vatican with an annual commitment of CHF 60,000 until 2027. As President of the Foundation for the Pontifical Swiss Guard, former Federal Councillor Ruth Metzler personally advocated for this at the meeting.

The money will be used, among other things, for the guardsmen's occupational benefits or their reintegration into the Swiss labor market, as Metzler explained at the synod in Oberwil, according to a statement from the church. The majority of synod members voted in favor. There were nine votes against and four abstentions among the 75 people present.

The synod also voted in favor of an increase in contributions of 97,000 francs for pastoral care at the Rehab Basel clinic. The assembly also approved the 2023 annual accounts, which closed with a profit of over 1.3 million francs, significantly higher than budgeted. The positive result was largely due to higher tax income from legal entities, according to the press release.
