Germany's breweries sold less beer in the first half of the year despite the European Football Championship. The German Brewers' Association explains this with the mixed weather in spring and early summer and a general reluctance to consume.

During the European Championships, "the rollercoaster ride of temperatures and frequent thunderstorms put a damper on business for many brewers. Many a garden party fell through," wrote the German Brewers' Association in a press release.

According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, beer sales fell by 0.6 percent to around 4.2 billion liters in the first six months compared to the same period last year. In June, the month in which the European Championships began, only 777 million liters were sold - it was "the lowest result in a June since 1993". The statistics office also explained that the unstable weather may have contributed to this.

Almost 82 percent of the beer brewed in Germany is consumed domestically. According to the statistics, sales fell by 0.9 percent to 3.4 billion liters in the first half of the year. According to the statistics, 765.6 million liters were exported and sold to the breweries' employees, where sales increased slightly by 0.6 percent.

The Brewers' Association explained that 2024 will remain a challenging year for the almost 1,500 predominantly craft and medium-sized breweries in Germany. Growth rates are "not in sight" for the national beer market.
