The Bernese cantonal government does not want to take any additional measures to ensure parking facilities for people with disabilities. This is clear from its response to a motion by Simone Leuenberger, a member of the EPP cantonal council.

She justified the request with the increasing disappearance of parking spaces in public spaces while the need for disabled parking spaces is increasing.
Leuenberger instructed the government council to adapt parking facilities for people with mobility disabilities to demand and also to plan for them where no other parking facilities are available. In addition, disabled parking spaces should be retained if "normal" parking spaces are removed - if necessary by relocating them. Members of all parliamentary groups represented in the Grand Council also signed the motion.
Government sees no need
According to the response published on Monday, the Bernese Government Council finds it understandable that it can be advantageous for people with mobility impairments to travel from door to door by car. However, it came to the conclusion that there are already sufficient regulations in this regard. For example, wheelchair-accessible parking spaces must be provided when public buildings are built or renovated.
In the case of public roads, the legally stipulated balancing of interests also speaks against additional regulations in the Road Act. The interests of people with mobility disabilities would play an important, but not exclusive, role in this, the government response continues.
