The US state of California is severely restricting the use of cell phones in schools. The excessive use of smartphones is closely linked to an increase in anxiety disorders and depression, California Governor Gavin Newsom explained the decision.

The new law should help pupils to focus on learning goals, their social development and the world in front of them instead of screens, said Newsom. School children will be allowed to use phones in emergencies or with the permission of teachers or custodial staff. The bill, which was introduced on a bipartisan basis, is due to come into force in mid-2026.

With a population of around 39 million, California is the most populous US state.
