Apprentices at the canton of Aargau will receive higher wages from August. The canton wants to become a more attractive employer for the younger generation, the state chancellery announced on Friday.

The wage rates will be raised and standardized in line with the recommendations of professional associations. The wages for apprenticeships with a Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ) are now standardized, according to the press release. In the first year of apprenticeship, the wage is CHF 820, in the second CHF 1030, in the third CHF 1500 and in the fourth CHF 1700.

Exceptions are the three-year apprenticeships for farmers and forest wardens, whose wages are slightly higher and start at CHF 1,300 and CHF 900 respectively, as set out in the "Ordinance on Wages for Special Categories of Personnel".

Canton as a large training company

With currently 135 apprentices in 15 different professions, the cantonal administration is one of the largest training companies in Aargau, according to the State Chancellery. Every year, 40 to 50 new apprentices join the cantonal administration.

With the new salary model, the canton is creating a solid basis for remaining competitive in the competition for skilled workers with other training companies in the private sector and administration.

"By raising and standardizing wages for apprentices, we are offering young people fair and appreciative training conditions," cantonal councillor Markus Dieth is quoted as saying. It is important to strengthen the canton of Aargau as an attractive employer in order to continue to have well-trained and motivated employees in the future, said Dieth.

More pay for police trainees and young people

The canton is also increasing the hourly wages for "young people in a temporary employment relationship without the purpose of training". Previously, they received a maximum of CHF 16.50 per hour. Now, the hourly wage for 14 to 20-year-olds will be graduated according to age from 14 to 20 francs.

The canton is also giving itself more leeway when it comes to the remuneration of police officers in training. In the first year of training, the maximum will be increased from CHF 4850 to CHF 5100, and in the second year from CHF 5350 to CHF 5600.
