The 2025 budget of the red-green dominated government of the city of Bern has triggered mixed reactions. The SP believes that the deficit of CHF 28 million is justifiable. The FDP, SVP and Center Party, on the other hand, are calling for a course correction in financial policy.

The municipal council is putting the future of the city of Bern at risk, warned the FDP in its communiqué on Monday. It is speculating on record-high tax revenues and yet budgeting for high deficits and even higher debts.

The city should finally focus on its core tasks, demanded the FDP. It should also build more intelligently and without ideological blinkers. It was also important to take care of high-income taxpayers instead of driving them away.

From a centrist perspective, the city of Bern is "on a direct path to a tax increase". The deep red deficit shows that there is no will to get the city's finances under control. The Center Party is also calling for a return to the core tasks.

The SVP is calling for "a departure from the frivolous financial policy" that the red-green majority is pursuing at the expense of future generations. The city definitely has an expenditure problem, not a revenue problem. Expenditure must be clearly prioritized.

SP sees itself vindicated

The SP takes a completely different view of the last budget, which was drawn up under the leadership of its outgoing finance director Michael Aebersold. The budget bears witness to a growing and popular city. The SP is committed to ensuring that this remains the case. The rising tax revenues show that the city is a popular place to move to.
