The protection of the foundations of life should be enshrined in the Federal Constitution. This is what the Biodiversity Initiative demands. The committee launched the referendum campaign for September 22 with a media appearance in Bern on Tuesday.

According to the committee, biodiversity in Switzerland is in a bad way. Around half of natural habitats are under threat and around one in three animal and plant species are endangered or already extinct. Clean water, fertile soils and beautiful landscapes are part of the basis of Swiss life.

The initiative calls for sufficient areas and sufficient financial resources to be reserved for the preservation of natural resources. It does not give any figures. It also aims to ensure that nature, diverse landscapes and beautiful sites are preserved, even outside protected areas.

The Federal Council and Parliament recommend that it be rejected. Parliament refrained from making a counter-proposal.
