A driver had a chase with the police in the Basel region on Wednesday morning. The man was driving a stolen car and evaded a police check. The police finally arrested the fugitive, who was hiding in a forest, in Bretzwil BL.

The arrested man is a 48-year-old Swiss national, as the Basel police announced on Friday. The public prosecutor's office has opened criminal proceedings.
According to the statement, the man fled from Ziefen in the direction of Reigoldswil shortly before 7 a.m. in the vehicle that had been reported stolen. The police launched a major search operation and found the driver in Bretzwil. However, he continued his escape and parked the car on a forest path. A police dog then found the fleeing driver hiding in the forest around 400 meters from the vehicle, it is reported.
