The federal government is responding to the poor bread grain harvest. In order to meet domestic demand for grains such as wheat, rye and spelt, the federal government is releasing the last part of the tariff quota for bread grain ahead of schedule.

The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) will release this partial quota next Friday (October 4), as announced on Monday. The industry association Swissgranum had asked the federal government at the beginning of September to release the partial quota in October instead of November.

The reason for the poor harvest was the wet weather from sowing in spring to harvest. At the beginning of September, Swissgranum expected the harvest of bread grain and barley to be around a third worse, albeit with regional differences. And due to the wet weather in some places, mold affected the fields.

The last partial quota now released comprises 15,000 tons, according to the FOAG. The Federal Council will decide in October on the temporary increase in the regular tariff quota of 70,000 tons, which was also requested by the industry. The industry has requested an additional 20,000 tons, the FOAG wrote.
