The number of wolf kills decreased in the cantons of Valais and Graubünden at the end of August 2024. This is despite the fact that the wolf population is still increasing slightly, as several environmental associations reported on Friday.

In Valais, 15 percent fewer kills were recorded than at the same time in the previous year, and in the canton of Graubünden even 35 percent fewer, they said. Already in 2023 - before the start of proactive wolf regulation - the number of kills had "fallen significantly" compared to the previous year. The figures underline the effectiveness of herd protection.

According to the figures, there are now over 35 wolf packs living in Switzerland. The population continues to increase slightly. There is an opposing trend in the number of livestock killed by wolves. These figures thus showed a downward trend for the second year in a row after 2023. This is according to official data from the cantons of Valais and Graubünden. This means that not only the number of kills per wolf, but also the absolute number of wolf kills is declining.
