Severe forest fires are raging in the Ecuadorian capital Quito. Around 100 families were brought to safety, according to the civil protection authorities. The fires broke out in a rural area on the outskirts of the metropolis and then spread into the urban area.

Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and police officers battled the flames. Helicopters were also used to extinguish the fire. President Daniel Noboa cut short his visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and returned to Ecuador to oversee the operation.

Worst drought for around 60 years

"We are in the worst climate situation in decades, which requires urgent decisions at all levels of government," wrote Noboa on X. According to the Ecuadorian weather service, the South American country is suffering from the worst drought in around 60 years. This is why electricity is currently being rationed.

The recent fires could have been started deliberately. "If it turns out that this was done deliberately, those involved will be prosecuted for terrorism," wrote President Noboa on X.
