Due to a fire in the region of the popular vacation resort of Platanias in western Crete, numerous tourists had to be evacuated from hotel facilities on Wednesday. According to the fire department, fire-fighting helicopters and powerful units are being deployed to bring the flames under control.
The local Greek radio station (ERT-Chania) reported that it was mainly dried grass that was on fire, but that the smoke was very heavy. The evacuation of the hotels had been ordered as a precautionary measure, the broadcaster continued, showing videos and photos of tourists leaving the hotels to be taken to safety. The portal zarpanews.gr also showed videos.
It initially remained unclear how the fire broke out. The Civil Defense has repeatedly warned that the fire risk in Greece will continue until the end of October, despite some heavy rainfall.
