Due to the redesign of Clarastrasse, the Basel Carnival Cortège will now run through Claragraben from 2025. The route between Claraplatz and Messe will no longer be possible. Instead, it will run in both directions via Claragraben to Wettsteinplatz, as the Fasnacht committee announced on Thursday.

According to the civil engineering office, the renovation of Clarastrasse will be completed in fall 2025. Nevertheless, the Cortège will "almost certainly" take the new route in subsequent years, said committee chairman Robi Schärz when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. Due to the structural changes, the road will probably be too narrow. It would be possible to direct the cliques, floats and floats in one direction only, but hardly in a "counter-march", i.e. in both directions, as Schärz said.
However, Clarastrasse should continue to be part of the carnival perimeter. It should continue to be available for the star march of the Guggen on Tuesday, for the break areas and as an "entry and exit route" to the route, as stated in the committee's "Sommerpost".
To compensate for the shortened route in Kleinbasel, the arch at the Kunstmuseum will be enlarged at the same time. The outer route will now run via Aeschenplatz and the inner route via Brunngässlein. "The committee regrets the shortened route in Kleinbasel, but would also like to point out that many cliques have already tended to shorten the Messebogen in the past," the press release states. The committee is relieved to have found compensation in the Aeschenplatz area.
The committee also announced that the big joint carnival parade of the kindergartens and elementary school of Basel, Riehen and Bettingen will take place on February 27, 2025. This will be the fourth edition of the Basel school carnival in the city center. The committee is expecting 12,000 participants and thus a new record.
