Armed attackers have killed at least 14 people in Afghanistan. As reported by the Afghan news channel Tolonews, the incident took place on Thursday on the border between the central provinces of Daikundi and Ghur.

According to the report, the victims had gathered to greet pilgrims returning from Karbala in Iraq. Shiites had gathered there around three weeks ago for the important commemorative festival of Arbain.

The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. "Soldiers of the caliphate" had fired "at a group of apostates" with assault rifles, according to an IS statement distributed on the usual propaganda channels.

According to Tolonews, a spokesman for the Taliban Interior Ministry confirmed the incident without giving further details. Although the Taliban promised more security after taking power in August 2021 and also declared IS defeated, the group regularly carries out attacks. IS considers Shiites to be apostates from Islam.
