According to the Israeli army, the freed Hamas hostage Kaid Farhan Alkadi was unguarded when he was rescued. "Farhan was found by the troops when he was alone," the military said. Units of the army and the domestic intelligence service Shin Bet had freed him from a tunnel in which they suspected hostages and terrorists.

Why the man kidnapped from Israel on October 7 was not guarded remained unclear, as did the question of whether other hostages were being held in the tunnel, which the military described as a "complex underground system". The Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" reported, citing the military, that Alkadi had heard the Israeli forces during the operation and called out to them.

Israel's army had announced that special units had freed the man from the hands of the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. It is the first hostage to be rescued alive from a tunnel.
