The electoral list with the name "National Unity" won 194 out of 250 seats, 178 of which were for Assad's Baath Party, as the German Press Agency learned from election committee circles. The remaining seats went to candidates who describe themselves as independent.

It was the fourth parliamentary election in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011, in which Assad's government now controls around two thirds of the country. Only in these areas were people called to cast their votes. The election was held on Monday.

Election committee promises "democratic atmosphere"

Observers had already described it as a farce that the Assad government was trying to restore its legitimacy in this way, as the central administration is not recognized at all in many regions.

The chairman of the election committee said that his body wanted to "create a democratic atmosphere" by taking steps to ensure the freedom of voters. More than 7 million of the 19 million eligible voters cast their votes.
