There are conflicting reports about attacks on three military bases of the Somali army. According to the army, the attacks were repelled, with heavy losses for the Islamists.
A military spokesman said that five soldiers and at least 80 Al-Shabaab fighters had been killed. A government spokesman even spoke of around 100 Islamists killed. The information could not be independently verified.
The militia, on the other hand, reported 71 soldiers killed on its radio station. According to the Al-Shabaab report, US drones were also used in the fighting.
The Somali government has been fighting against the terrorist militia, which controls parts of Somalia, for years. Al-Shabaab has also repeatedly carried out suicide attacks in the capital Mogadishu.
Most recently, the militia attacked a popular café during the European Football Championship final, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.
