At least six people have died in the protests against the controversial election victory of authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. The human rights organization Foro Penal announced that two young people were among the victims. In addition, 132 demonstrators were arrested.

The National Electoral Council officially declared Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, the winner of Sunday's presidential election. The opposition accuses the government of electoral fraud and claims victory for its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. The USA, the European Union, the Organization of American States and a number of Latin American countries are also questioning the official election results.

"We are dealing with a coup d'état instigated by the fascist forces of the extreme right with the support of the imperial forces, US imperialism," said Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López. "We will thwart this coup d'état."
