Following his withdrawal from the election campaign, US President Joe Biden has sworn in the Democratic Party to the new frontwoman Kamala Harris. Harris is a person of character and tremendous integrity, said Biden at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago. "The choice of Kamala was the very first decision I made (...) when I became a candidate. It was the best decision I've made in my entire career." The two have become close friends. "She's tough, she's experienced and she has tremendous integrity."

Biden called out to the thousands of delegates in the hall: "Are you ready to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?" He emphasized: "The best days are not behind us, they are ahead of us." His speech was repeatedly interrupted by cheers.

Biden had dropped out of the race for a second term in July. The Democrat had come under massive pressure in his own party due to his age and doubts about his mental fitness. His deputy Harris moved up and was able to rally the party behind her in a short space of time. Walz is her vice-presidential candidate in the election campaign.
