Trump wants to be re-elected for the Republicans in November and is running against the current US Vice President Kamala Harris from the Democrats.
Starmer is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. He did not meet with Harris - according to the Times newspaper due to scheduling difficulties. "I have said several times that I want to meet both candidates," Starmer said in advance, according to PA. He believes in personal relationships on the world stage.
Trump's stance on Ukraine
When asked whether he would be prepared to stand up to Trump on issues such as support for Ukraine, Starmer emphasized the special relationship between the two countries. This always takes precedence over the question of who holds which office.
Trump also wants to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky today. The Republican is critical of further US aid for Ukraine and recently publicly criticized Zelensky for not wanting to enter into a deal with Russia. Starmer's meeting with Trump was also attended by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who criticized Trump years ago for being a Nazi sympathizer, among other things.
