The Republic of Cyprus has put in place a detailed plan to support possible evacuations of citizens from the EU and other states in the event of further military escalation in Lebanon. This was announced by the Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letybiotis on X.

Cyprus is a good 250 kilometers from the north of Israel. It is the closest EU country geographically. At the end of September, government circles had already said that ferries could be used if the airport in the Lebanese capital Beirut had to close.

Those wishing to leave would then be taken from Lebanon to the port cities of Limassol or Larnaca. People have already been brought to safety on these routes several times since the beginning of the Gaza war.

The evacuation plan, known as "Hestia", provides for refugees to be temporarily housed in tents, schools and hotels until they fly on to their home countries.
