Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in memory of the US soldiers killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan three years ago. Some of the victims' family members were also present. On his Truth Social platform, the 78-year-old called the withdrawal from Afghanistan the "most embarrassing moment in our country's history" and once again accused the government of US President Joe Biden of incompetence.

Devastating terrorist attack
The attack at Kabul airport, which occurred during the withdrawal of the US military from Afghanistan, killed more than 170 Afghans as well as 11 US servicemen and 2 US servicewomen. Trump repeatedly blames the Democrat Biden and his government for the chaotic withdrawal and also uses this as a target in his election campaign. The Republican wants to return to the White House after the presidential election on November 5 and is running against Biden's deputy Kamala Harris.
Neither Biden nor Harris were present at the wreath-laying ceremony in Arlington. Harris said she was mourning the loss of US military personnel today and every day. "My prayers are with their families and loved ones. My heart breaks for their pain and loss." Biden said: "We must never forget the immense price that was paid for our freedom." The victims were "patriots in the best sense of the word".
Biden without public appointments
Biden is spending this week at his private home in Rehoboth Beach in Delaware and has no public appointments so far. The 81-year-old also had no public appearances last week after his speech at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago on Monday. He and his wife Jill were staying at a friend's luxury estate in California and traveled to Rehoboth Beach on Sunday.
