The parliamentary elections have begun in Austria. Almost 6.4 million eligible voters are called to cast their ballots. The last polling stations close at 5 pm. An initial projection is expected shortly afterwards.

According to the polls, the right-wing FPÖ is the favorite to win. The pollsters put the right-wing populists at around 27 percent. The conservative ÖVP can expect around 25 percent. The social democratic SPÖ is polling at around 21%. Even if the FPÖ wins, it is questionable whether its party leader Herbert Kickl will become chancellor of the Alpine republic. So far, all other parties have refused to work with the 55-year-old.

Austria was last governed by a coalition of the ÖVP and the Greens. The alliance was forged by the then ÖVP leader Sebastian Kurz.
