The 40-year-old Indi has been pregnant for almost 19 months, Zurich Zoo announced on Wednesday. The father of the as yet unborn calf is the 21-year-old bull elephant Thai. Indi is considered a very experienced elephant cow and has already given birth successfully several times.
The zoo expects the baby elephant to be born between the end of April and the beginning of June. The maximum gestation period for Asian elephants is 22 months.
Last September, elephant cub Zali died at Zurich Zoo after suffering a serious leg injury while playing. Zali was born on the night of Easter Saturday.
