Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not want to agree to cooperation between NATO and its partner Israel in the future. NATO member Turkey will not accept such initiatives "until a comprehensive and sustainable peace is established in the Palestinian territories."

Erdogan wrote this on Platform X following the NATO summit in Washington. "It is impossible for the Israeli government, which tramples on the fundamental values of our alliance, to continue its partnership with NATO," Erdogan said.

Israel is not a member of the defense alliance, but is a partner with which there is extensive cooperation. According to NATO's website, for example, NATO and Israel have been working together for almost 30 years in areas such as science, technology, counter-terrorism, civil defense, combating weapons of mass destruction and on issues such as women, peace and security. Israeli soldiers are also regularly involved in NATO military exercises. Turkey has been a NATO member since 1952.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war, relations between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated drastically. Erdogan described the Islamist Hamas as a "liberation organization" and compared Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.
